Professor emeritus Dorothy Pawluch’s work honored by former PhD students

A collection of writings and research in honor of Professor Emeritus, Dorothy Pawluch, was recently featured in The American Sociologist. The festschrift was organized by several of her former PhD students to celebrate her retirement and recognize her contribution to fostering symbolic interactionism and qualitative research in Canada.

The collection also included the work of former students as well as a paper written by one of Pawluch’s early collaborators, British sociologist, Steve Woolgar, who now works at Oxford University.

Several of the festschrift authors also attended and presented at a session in Pawluch’s honour at the most recent meetings of the Qualitative Analysis Conference, which were held in St. John’s Newfoundland in June 2022.

The conference website has also posted a tribute to Pawluch’s under the header “Pawluch Legacy.”

Speaking on the honour, Pawluch said, “I feel an immense sense of pride in how some of us in Sociology and our students have succeeded in putting McMaster’s strengths in symbolic interactionism and social problems theory on the world map and in the careers and scholarship of our students who are now assuming positions of leadership in universities across the country.”
